How to Start a Medical Billing Business

Medical billing can be an excellent opportunity for people interested in starting a business based from the comfort of their own home. For an experienced professional, building a profitable medical billing business from a home office is an attainable goal. A home-based business gives you the flexibility to work on your own time, eliminates the expense of a commute and creates a greater sense of satisfaction in building a successful venture from the ground up.
1) Starting a medical billing business -- or any business, for that matter -- requires a lot of dedication and commitment. In order to succeed, you should be a self-motivated person who's capable of making detailed plans and following through with them. In most cases, you'd benefit greatly from gaining experience at an established company before you decide to start one of your own.
2) If you do decide that starting a business is right for you, the next step is medical billing training. You can train for a medical billing career at any of a number of schools across the country, or even online from programs that offer online certifications. Before you enroll in a medical billing training program, make a list of your priorities (Budget? Flexibility? Reputation? Pace?) and choose a program that suits your needs.
3) After completing your medical billing training, get some hands-on experience at an established company, hospital or doctor's office. Most doctors will be hesitant to hire a biller who doesn't have experience, so you need to prove yourself in the field before starting your company. Working for an established company will also allow you to learn the business and the ins and outs of the local market.
4) Once you have both the necessary training and experience, you're ready to make the first move towards starting your own business. Unless you have enough savings to fund the company, you'll probably need to take out a small business loan to get the company up and running. Before you approach a bank for a loan, though, you need to create a business plan to prove your ability to pay back the debt. Estimate how much money you'll need to start the business, how quickly you'll be able to grow revenue and how you plan to market the business.
5) When you have the money to get the business running, it's time to get to work! You'll need to align yourself with a reputable, reliable clearinghouse to reformat your data and check your claims for accuracy. Also, make sure that your computer setup suits your business needs. Experiment with different software, and choose the one that works best for you. Make sure it comes with reliable technical support to avoid plenty of headaches.
6) When your setup is complete, market your services to local doctors and hospitals. Figure out what their biggest problem is and how you can solve it, and focus on qualities that differentiate you from your competitors. Building a business is hard work, but the results can be extremely rewarding.
